Submersible vs. Jet Pumps – Why Well Pumps Fail

Your well pump is the heart of your water system—and like any mechanical component, it can wear out or fail. At Lakeland Water Pump Co., we service both submersible pumps and jet pumps, the two most common types of water well pumps found across New Jersey.

Submersible Well Pumps

A submersible pump is installed deep inside your well and pushes water up to your home. Because it operates underwater, it’s generally quiet and efficient. However, submersible pumps can fail due to:

  • Burned-out motors
  • Worn impellers or bearings
  • Wire damage from age or rodents
  • Clogged intake screens
  • Waterlogged or failed pressure tanks

When a submersible pump fails, it usually requires pulling the pump up from the well for inspection or replacement.

Jet Pumps

Jet pumps are typically located above ground and use suction to draw water from the well. These are often found in shallow wells, or in deeper wells with a two-pipe system. Jet pump failures can be caused by:

  • Loss of prime (air in the system)
  • Leaking suction lines
  • Pressure switch problems
  • Motor issues or overheating

Jet pumps are more accessible than submersibles, but they still require proper installation and periodic maintenance.

Don’t Ignore the Signs of Trouble

If you notice low water pressure, air in your pipes, or no water at all, it could be a sign your pump is starting to fail. Instead of guessing, call a licensed professional to troubleshoot your system safely and accurately.

At Lakeland Water Pump Co., we’ve been helping New Jersey homeowners restore water pressure and replace faulty pumps for decades. Whether it’s a jet pump, submersible pump, or pressure tank problem—we’re ready to help.
